A Welcome from SUSA President Abby Widom
On August 28, 2009
Any student at the University of Maryland can see that Business Students have it great. We have comfortable chairs, our own restaurant, and of course, the nicest building on campus. However, as Smith Students we know that there is much more to being a business major than our physical resources. Business Majors work hard for their degrees, and it's not necessarily a smooth ride to graduation.
In this day and age, the business world is not as bright and gleaming as it was when we came in as freshman. Companies around the world are cutting back and the effects are trickling down to business schools across the country. Students everywhere are nervous and apprehensive about their futures, and some are even switching majors to avoid the market altogether. However that's not the case at the Robert H. Smith School of Business.
Beyond the beautiful building, beyond the catered food, and beyond the advanced technology in every classroom, the undergraduate student body at the Robert H. Smith School of Business is brilliant, innovative, and driven. More than 70% of the undergraduate students are involved on campus and most of that is within our very own Business School. There are 26 clubs and 7 committees, all of which have the goal of getting students jobs while exposing them to cool things along the way.
That's what SUSA is here for. Your very own tour guide to the Smith School here to help every student find his/her niche, job, or passion. Whether you are in College Park or Shady Grove, or whether you were born in Silver Spring or Shanghai, there is somewhere for you to get involved and grow in the Smith community. Your experience in the Business School is the foundation for your future, and SUSA is here to help you make the most of it.
Smith students are lucky to have the resources we do, and it is a feeling of gratification every time one walks into the Van Munching halls. Everyone knows that a Robert H. Smith School of Business student has worked extremely hard to be where they are, and that feeling can only be shared by the rest of the business community. "From the outside looking in you can't understand it, from the inside looking out you can't explain it."
Enjoy your time at Smith, and let's all work together to make our Business School, THE Business School!
Sincerely,
Abby Widom
President, SUSA
